"While the state of Michigan continues its assessment of Detroit as a failed city, the students within are raising rebellious voices with demand for education. The entire process of their demonstration, the necessity of the solidarity amongst each other, is in itself an important lesson that education begins in the community, and the people are always at the heart of this foundation. For years, the entire culture of the public education system has been a competitive practice, dividing students through grades, ranks and spacial separation for a controlled learning experience. This paradigm has devolved into an unhealthy, unsustainable model concerned only with maintaining status quo, unconcerned that the institutions have become content with maximizing profits with no social safety net. “We are children! We are people! We are not dollar signs!” proclaimed one student through her bullhorn."
Detroit’s Western High School Walks Out For Freedom : Common Breath Media
don’t forget to call in support (and reblog!) of the students if you can! here’s the information:
The students are now asking all of us, as their allies, to contact the following Detroit Public Schools officials immediately to demand:
(1) that the suspensions of the Southwestern and Western International High School students be rescinded;
(2) that public schools be kept open; and
(3) that spaces are created for students, families, and community members to have legitimate dialogue about decisions concerning their schools.
